HP Laserjet 1200 or 1300, and possiblly more Laserjet models have the same problem with Vista 64 bit and Windows 7 64 bit. My desktop is XP 32 bit with a shared HP Laserjet 1200. I have no problem to share it with my other XP and Vista 32 bit laptops through wireless network at home. But I just purchased a new HP Windows 7 64bit laptop and I could not install the shared printer even through I used the downloaded HP universal printer drivers for Windows 64 bit. I searched the HP support forums and found this link was very helpful.

Now my Windows 7 64 bit is working with the shared HP Laserjet 1200. Here is the solution from the link and I added some more details.

1. Disconnect the printer from the desktop computer on the network. Then, connect the printer directly to the new Window 7 64 bit or Vista 64 bit laptop using the USB cable. The laptop loads the correct driver automatically.

2. Print a test page. This is an important step.

3. Disconnect the printer from the laptop and reconnect it back to the desktop.

4. Open the list of printers of the new Windows 7 64 bit laptop, find the LaserJet printer. Right click and open Printer properties not the Properties at the bottom of list.

5. Find the ports tab. Change from the USB port DOT4_xxx to the network connection. If you do not know how to change it to network connection, click Add Port, then click Local Port. Typed in your_desktop_pc_name your_shared_printer_name This is just an example.. Click OK to save it.

6. Print another test page.

Following the above steps, you will have a shared HP Laserjet 1200 PCL5 printer. To change it to PCL6 printer driver, you will need to use the downloaded HP Universal Drivers for Windows 64 bit. I will not discuss it here.

Thanks to the first person who came out this great idea.

Thanks, worked great

Hello everyone.

I have an HP 1200 printer that is shared from a server running CentOS Linux.  I have tried in the past to install this shared printer on Windows 7 using the 64-bit drivers for this printer and have had no luck.  Since I am an IT person, and really have no desire to acually have to disconnect the printer and carry it to the desktop computer and connect it to the USB port, do the printer install, and then disconnect it and carry it back and reconnect it to the server, I have found a MUCH easier way to fix this problem

Here are the steps:

1. Open an explorer window by clicking on Computer in the start menu

2. In the address bar at the top, click on the computer icon and type in ip_address_of _print_server you can use the computer name if you have name resolution on your network and hit enter

3. Double-click the share printer that is shown in the explorer window.  A window will pop up saying no driver found.   Simply click on OK

4. An Add Printer Wizard window will now pop up prompting you for the manufacturer and model of you printer.  Simply select HP for the manufacturer and laserjet 2200 for the printer, and click on the OK button.

There you go.  The HP laserjet 2200 printer driver works just fine for me.  And I didn t have to move the blasted printer to make it work.

Hope that this helps people out.

I don t know where all your problems come from because Win7 even 64bit does almost everything by itself.

It didn t install the driver fully automatically but i have the HP LaserJet 1200 driver installed and working on my Windows 7 64bit. Here s what I did:

Windows found and recognized the device, but couldn t find the driver software via Windows Update so I opened Device Manager and updated the driver software from there somehow Windows was able to find it automatically this way. The printer was installed as HP LaserJet 1200 USB along with IEEE 1284.4 compatible printer and it works perfectly now.

Hi Daniel,

Unfortunately, that doesn t solve the issue.

The link you gave was for the HP 1200 drivers page, but none of these work for specific configurations as many people here have written.

If I plug the HP LJ 1200 directly to my Win7 64-bit machine, it works fine.

However, if I plug the HP LJ 1200 to a WHS v1 or to a WinXP 32-bit machine, I can print correctly from this machine, but I cannot share this printer to my Win7 64-bit machine.

More details:

When I try to add a printer, it requires drivers, and none of the Universal Drivers on the page you linked works.

If I try to install this universal driver software, it asks me which printer to use, I then select the network printer on my WHS machine, and then it searches on Windows update, doesn t find a driver and asks me where to locate the driver.  So we re turning in circles

Any solution.

Thanks regards,

I got all the way down to making the local port:

5. Find the ports tab. Change from the USB port DOT4_xxx to the network connection. If you do not know how to change it to network connection, click Add Port, then click Local Port. Typed in your_desktop_pc_name your_shared_printer_name This is just an example.. Click OK to save it. 6. Print another test page.

any suggestions. At least I know now that I can plug the printer manually into my computer.

Thanks for taking your time

I too had the same problem; very frustrating.

My LJ1200 is connected to a print server built into an SMC router.  I was important to me to have the features of the PCL6 driver.  The list of drivers available on Win7 only has a PCL5 version listed for the HP1200.  So, I used a driver available on Win7 that is for a different HP LJ printer.  My installation is as follows.  Hope that this works for you.

Connecting to Server Based HP LaserJet 1200

Computers with Windows 7 Operating System

via Wifi Connection or USB ConnectionDisable Network or leave network connected, but Turn Off Printer.

2   Start select Devices Printers Devices Printers window appears select Add a printer What type of printer do you want to install. window appears select Add a local printer Choose a printer port window opens

3. Select Create a new port It does not matter if there is already a port listed in the alternate option above.  Selecting Create a new port will allow placement of the router IP address click down menu arrow select Standard TCP/IP Port Next

4. Type a printer host name or IP address box opens Next

5. Type in the Router IP 192.168.1.2 for the SMC router this will automatically put in the number for Port name as IP_192.168.1.2 Next Detecting TCP/IP port window opens and a search for the printer device begins automatically

6. Additional Port Information Required box opens It is stated that the device was not found select Custom for Device Type click on Settings button Configure standard TCP/IP port monitor box opens click LPR for Protocol for LPR  Settings Queue Name type LPT1 without the quotes OK This added the port configured for the wireless router.

7. Now you are back to the Add Port Information Required box Next

8. Install Printer Driver box opens click Windows update button

9. select HP in the left box select HP LaserJet 3050 Series PCL6 in the right box Next Type a printer name box opens: type a short printer name Next click Print test page

10. Now I recommend testing the driver by creating a Word document with two pages File Print in the Print box select the printer that you just installed select Preferences Finishing tab select Print both sides manually OK click on Print.   If the manual two sided copying works correctly, you are in business.

First message I get is No driver found to locate one manually, click OK

Then a dialog box with browse to the inf area.

I choose C: temp hp where I have unzipped the files.

Then I get an error message saying Connect to Printer; Windows cannot locate a suitable printer driver

I have tried with all the 64bit drivers on the webpage, 6 PCL, 5PCL, PS and the UPD. All give me the same errors.

I have also tried the install.exe file but it does the same.

I have tried logging in as an administrator, I have tried changing access rights and I have tried relocating the files.

Same error.

I have tried installing Canon printers, and Kyocera printers, they work perfectly.

Since you ve already submitted a review for this product, this submission will be added as an update to your original review.

Similar issues here. I ve found that the native driver in both Windows 32 bit and 64 bit work as a local machine. In other words connect the Laser Jet 1200 to the.

Ditto. I am having the same problem as well. In fact I am having difficulty connecting to any of our HP printers on the network. These printers workn on this domian for all other computers, including many Xp stations, Server 2000, Server 2003, 200 Pro, worked on Windows Vista 32. I can not figure out any work around.

We have laserjet 1200, laserjet 2200, laserjet 4050, lasserjet 8000, color laser 1320. I can print to NONE of them. Incredibly difficult for me on this Windows 7 x64 machine. Dead to the printing world. We are entirely HP up here for printers and all are dead to me. PLEASE HELP.
